The Futurewear Collective: A New Era of South African Style

A visionary fusion proving that accessible fashion can be both aspirational and innovative.

A new chapter in South African fashion unfolds with the debut of the Futurewear Collective — a limited-edition capsule that brings together seven rising stars from PnP Clothing’s Futurewear programme, each reimagining what collaboration looks like in contemporary design.

Under the mentorship of acclaimed designer Gavin Rajah and the creative guidance of PnP Clothing Managing Executive Hazel Pillay, the initiative marks a milestone for Futurewear — a project established in 2020 to nurture emerging designers and champion local craftsmanship.

Each designer has interpreted a signature print by former Futurewear alumnus and now mentor Julia Buchanan, creating a dialogue between past and present, experience and experimentation. The result: a collection that’s cohesive yet refreshingly diverse — a celebration of individuality united by shared creative purpose.

Pillay explains, “Every piece has been proudly designed and made in South Africa through the collective effort of eight designers, five local suppliers and 18 small factories. It’s a true community of makers — from photographers to pattern cutters — all working together to bring this vision to life.”

From Katekani Moreku’s effortlessly draped one-shoulder top to Zarah Cassim’s ethereal flowing dress, the Futurewear Collective is a showcase of imagination and modern femininity. Other highlights include Sipho Mbuto’s sharply tailored blazer and culottes, Kiav Mitoo’s ruffled satin jumpsuit, Cinani Nhlapo’s playful baby doll dress, Ilsė Vincent’s bohemian blouse and balloon pants, and Yamkela Mahlelehlele’s multi-tie blouse and cummerbund skirt — all rendered in Buchanan’s vivid floral print on pearl chiffon.

Romantic yet versatile, the collection balances international sensibility with local soul — think sheer layers, voluminous bows, and fluid ruffles styled with chiffon accessories and sculptural handbags. Every garment embodies PnP Clothing’s ethos: design-led fashion that’s accessible, ethical, and proudly South African.

“The Futurewear Collective is a celebration of what happens when creativity meets collaboration,” says Rajah. “It’s a movement — one that uplifts emerging talent, strengthens our design community, and shows that fashion made in South Africa can lead on both craftsmanship and innovation.”

Available now at select PnP Clothing stores and online, the Futurewear Collective invites fashion lovers to wear their values — and be part of a story woven with creativity, collaboration, and homegrown pride.
