“Great designs are distant echoes of eternity, made visible by skilled creators, for the whole world to see.”
It’s a statement almost verging on philosophy, and one that raises an interesting question: what allows a design to endure? Trends come and go, tastes evolve, but every so often a design redefines its field forever. Those pieces become anchor points in our collective consciousness. They become quiet revolutions.
Forty years ago, Rado introduced one such design. This year, the Swiss watchmaker celebrated that milestone with the unveiling of the Integral 40-Year Anniversary Edition, welcoming invited media and guests to the top floor of Zeitz MOCAA overlooking Cape Town’s harbour for an evening dedicated to one of the brand’s defining creations.
The atmosphere was one of relaxed glamour, carrying an easy confidence that seemed to mirror the watch itself. Guests arrived impeccably dressed, yet conversations flowed naturally as people moved between displays, examined the watches and shared stories over dinner.
Displays traced the evolution of the Integral as guests examined anniversary models up close while exploring exhibits explaining the science behind Rado’s pioneering high-tech ceramic. Unlike many museum pieces, these watches were there to be experienced. We were invited to handle them, appreciating not only their appearance but also the smooth, almost silk-like feel that has become synonymous with the material. It was a subtle but fitting reminder that Rado’s greatest innovations have always been designed to be worn rather than simply admired.

Yet the evening wasn’t simply a celebration of a watch. It was a celebration of an idea.
Long before the Integral, Rado had already established itself as a company fascinated by the relationship between beauty and longevity. The launch of the DiaStar Original in 1962 introduced the world’s first scratch-resistant watch, challenging the industry’s understanding of what a luxury timepiece could be. But for Rado, hardness alone was never the destination. The goal was never simply to create stronger materials; it was to preserve great design.
That philosophy reached a defining moment in 1986 with the arrival of the Integral, the world’s first watch collection crafted from high-tech ceramic. After years of research and development, Rado had created a material that combined exceptional durability with surprising lightness and comfort. High-tech ceramic adapts quickly to the wearer’s body temperature, creating a sensation that feels less like wearing a cold object and more like wearing something designed to belong on the wrist. More importantly, it allowed designers to pursue lasting beauty without compromise. Form and function no longer competed with one another; they became partners.

Throughout the commemorative publication presented during the evening, one idea surfaced time and again: that great design deserves to endure. It is a philosophy captured in one of Rado’s founding beliefs: “If we can imagine it, we can make it. And if we can make it, we will.” More than a slogan, it became a blueprint for decades of material innovation that would eventually earn Rado its reputation as the “Master of Materials.”
Perhaps that is why the Integral remains so distinctive forty years later. Rather than constantly reinventing the watch to chase changing fashions, Rado has spent four decades refining the original vision. The anniversary edition remains unmistakably Integral, preserving its rectangular silhouette, integrated bracelet and clean architectural lines while subtly incorporating the latest advances in materials and manufacturing. It feels less like a redesign than a continuation of an idea; a tribute to the original vision, refined through four decades of material innovation.

The celebration also marked the introduction of South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada as Rado’s newest brand ambassador. While the evening looked back on forty years of innovation, Rabada’s appointment represented the brand’s next chapter, pairing one of South Africa’s most accomplished sportsmen with a watch whose identity has always been built around precision, resilience and consistency.
The evening taught me what that philosophy means to Rado. I left understanding why the Integral has endured four decades of shifting trends and changing tastes: because it never stopped speaking with the same clarity as the day it was first imagined.
