The Salt Road

The Salt Road Returns: A Sophisticated Revival of Salt-Centric Cuisine in Houghton

The Salt Road is back—and it’s making waves with a quietly radical philosophy: salt as both ingredient and inspiration. Nestled within the revamped 10 2nd Avenue Boutique Hotel in Houghton, the reimagined restaurant invites Joburg’s culinary connoisseurs on a journey that’s as ancient as it is innovative.

The Salt Road

As global chefs embrace age-old techniques like curing, fermenting, and salt-baking, The Salt Road leads the local charge. Spearheaded by culinary consultant and salt savant Craig Cormack alongside Beau du Toit, the concept is underpinned by nearly 40 years of expertise and over 18 years of research into the world of salt—its origins, chemistry, and cultural history. Cormack’s rare private collection of 180 salts, sourced from across the globe, threads through a menu that champions technique over trend.

The interiors echo the kitchen’s refined simplicity: modern yet warm, grounded in the natural elegance of the Winelands but cleverly set in the heart of Johannesburg. It’s an urban escape designed for slow, sensory dining—where time stretches out and flavour deepens.

From pickling and fermenting to cooking directly on Himalayan slabs, the menu leans into salt’s transformative magic. Seasonal and sustainably minded, dishes are crafted with locally sourced produce, house-grown herbs, and a commitment to waste reduction. Composting is built into the kitchen culture; excellence, insists Cormack, begins with how you treat the land—and people.

Opening night, held on 26 July, set the tone for what’s to come. Guests like Tshepi Vundla and Renate Stuurman were treated to a sunset welcome with bubbles, followed by a multi-sensory salt and sound tasting, and finally, a candlelit feast that unfolded like a story in chapters.

The Salt Road

But The Salt Road isn’t just for food lovers. With its tucked-away setting in the serene hotel gardens, the space doubles as a stylish retreat for private dinners, milestone celebrations, or high-level business events. A dedicated whiskey and wine lounge offers curated pairing experiences, and seasonal chef’s table events promise return-worthy encounters.

Bookings are now open—and for those in search of something more than just a meal, The Salt Road is a dining destination where every bite tells a story, and every story begins with salt.
