“Speedmaster” is arguably one of the most iconic monikers to ever don a timepiece. The OMEGA Speedmaster is iconic, legendary, and, with its distinguised yet dynamic styling, a watch that can make the heart racing. Recently, the Swiss luxury watchmaker revealed a brand-new ‘racing style’ Speedmaster, equipped with a pioneering Spirate system.
The latest Speedmaster in OMEGA’s portfolio adds “Super” to the “Racing” moniker. And, indeed, it is (super, that is). Why? It is the first timepiece from the brand to feature a Spirate system, a revolutionary new set-up allowing for “ultra-fine” rate adjustments. Thanks to this “one-of-a-kind” mechanism, this variant can achieve a certified precision of only 0/+2 seconds a day. To meet these targets, the firm had to “reinvent the wheel”. The solution was a “totally new” Si14 balance spring, which allowed OMEGA to act on the stiffness of the hairspring’s attachement point through an eccentric adjustment mechanism found on the balance bridge.
Continuing with the mechanics of this ground-breaking OMEGA, the Speedmaster Super Racing is equipped with the brand’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 9920, which is the first movement to feature the abovementioned set-up. The self-winding chronograph unit, housed within a 44.25 mm steel case offering water resistance of up to 50 metres, beats at a frequency of 4 Hz, providing a power reserve of 60 hours.
This Speedmaster’s bold appearance is enhanced thanks to the addition of yellow highlights, found on the black ‘sandwich’ dial, replete with a honeycomb pattern, “racing style” minute-track, which gives the watch its name, and black ceramic bezel. A neat touch, the vibrant shade has also been applied on the gradient chronograph hand, while the small-seconds hand features black-and-yellow striking. In addition, the diamond-polished black arrowhead indexes are filled with yellow-glowing Super-LumiNova.
