Luxury with a purpose: Morukuru Beach Clean-ups

In May 2024, the Aspire Lifestyle team was invited to visit the luxurious Morukuru Beach Lodge at De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Overberg and, as a bonus, the main drawcard, attend their annual beach clean-up event.

The beach clean-up

Over 2.5 days, a group of guests, day visitors, and staff from Morukuru and CapeNature employees came together and ventured up and down the sand dunes along the coast in a plight to restore the beach’s pristine beauty. On the 16km trek, a wide variety of rubbish was picked up, from plastics to glass, rope and fishing lines and nets, and even a washed-up, broken-down fridge! A total of almost 4 tons of rubbish was picked up over the course of 2 days.

“As the Morukuru Family and Morukuru Goodwill Foundation, we remain committed to this cause, determined to keep the beaches clean and raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic waste. The heartfelt efforts of everyone involved inspire hope for a cleaner, more beautiful coastline. As we reflect on the success of this year’s event, we look forward to continued collaboration and greater participation in the future. Together, we can turn the tide against beach pollution and ensure these natural wonders remain pristine for generations to come.”

Look out for next year’s beach clean-up dates in May 2025, and book in advance to partake and make a difference.

Morukuru Beach Lodge redefines luxury getaways by integrating sustainability into every aspect of its design and operations. Constructed with eco-friendly materials like reclaimed railway sleepers and local sandstone, the lodge features energy-efficient designs that maximize natural light and ventilation, eliminating the need for air conditioning. Its roofs are adorned with fynbos, the region’s indigenous vegetation.

Both Morukuru Beach Lodge and its sister property, Morukuru Ocean House, operate completely off-grid. They harness solar energy to generate over 210,000 kWh annually, which helps offset nearly 150 tons of carbon emissions. Water conservation is a key focus, with systems in place for sustainable sourcing, filtration, and greywater recycling to support local ecosystems.
