Barefoot rugby. Rugged fields. Dreams that stretch far beyond home.
This was the early world of Burton Francis in Paarl – a boy chasing a rugby ball across patchwork pitches. Years later, that same boy returned to South Africa, not to rugby, but to craft wines that tell a story of place, purpose and possibility.
Rugby, France and a Taste of Terroir
Burton’s rugby career took him to France, where he played professionally as a fly-half. It was there, immersed in French culture, that he discovered Burgundy — a region where wine isn’t just a drink, it’s a story of soil, season, and heritage.
“Wine in Burgundy isn’t just something you drink. It tells the story of place, soil, and time,” Burton recalls.
He pursued an MBA in Wine and Spirits Business at the Burgundy School of Business, deepening his connection to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and the philosophy of terroir.
Bringing the Vision Home
Back in South Africa, Burton found his canvas in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Partnering with Kevin Grant of Ataraxia Wines, he began crafting small-production wines that honour the region’s unique Bokkeveld shale soils.

“From Paarl to Burgundy to Hemel-en-Aarde, soil has always symbolised growth and possibility. Wine is about that journey from soil to soul.”
Wines That Speak
Francis Wines may be young, but it’s already earning accolades:
2023 Chardonnay – 93 points: Layered aromas of lemon, acacia flower, and nougat; vibrant palate of white pear and lime, finishing long and balanced.
2023 Pinot Noir – 92 points: Spice and earthy notes frame cherry, rhubarb, and plum; velvety, structured palate with lingering complexity.
Limited editions – 1,929 bottles of Chardonnay and 938 of Pinot Noir – reflect careful vineyard selection and patient French oak maturation.
Giving Back: Francis Academy
Wine isn’t just about bottles for Burton. Through Francis Academy, 5% of every bottle sold goes toward youth development in rugby, education, and wine careers.
“Wine and rugby shaped who I am. Through the academy, I want young people to find their path — whether on the field, in the vineyard, or beyond.”

Investing in Tomorrow
In March 2026, three new students from Paarl joined the academy. Two will study tourism, one wine, with the future Francis Foundation providing additional resources to ensure every student can thrive.
Francis Wines is more than a label. It’s a journey from soil to soul, weaving together land, passion, and purpose — and inspiring a new generation along the way.
