Bubbles, Bold Moves & A New Era at Graham Beck

There’s a new chapter unfolding in the Cape winelands, and it’s sparkling.

At the House of Graham Beck in Robertson, a generational transition is officially underway. After nearly four decades at the helm, founding winemaker and Cap Classique pioneer Pieter “Bubbles” Ferreira is retiring, passing the cellar keys to long-time Cellarmaster Pierre de Klerk.

It’s less of a goodbye and more of a graceful handover. Under Ferreira’s visionary leadership, Graham Beck evolved from an ambitious local producer into a global Cap Classique powerhouse, poured in more than 50 countries and consistently ranked among the world’s finest bottle-fermented sparkling wines. His belief in South Africa’s potential to craft world-class bubbles helped redefine the category, elevating Cap Classique onto the international stage.

“Pieter’s legacy isn’t just in the wines,” says Helen Kock, CEO of Beck Family Estates. “It lives in the culture he built — one of patience, precision and absolute belief in what South Africa can achieve.”

Pieter Ferreira wasn’t just a winemaker, he was a global ambassador for South African wine. From early mornings in the cellar to international tastings abroad, he championed the craft with contagious passion, mentoring young talent and shaping a category that now commands global respect.

Now, Pierre de Klerk steps fully into the spotlight after more than 15 years working alongside Ferreira. Backed by winemaker Lizemari Geldenhuys, he continues the House’s terroir-driven philosophy, disciplined approach and long-term vision. The stylistic identity, the standards, the pursuit of the perfect bubble? All very much intact.

“I’ve had the privilege of learning from Pieter for over 15 years,” says de Klerk. “What he instilled in all of us is a deep respect for the vineyard, for time and for the process. That philosophy continues to guide everything we do.”

Ferreira, meanwhile, isn’t stepping away from sparkle. He’s turning his focus to his own label and personal ventures, keeping the fizz firmly flowing and continuing his lifelong commitment to craftsmanship and Cap Classique excellence.

A toast to legacy, continuity and the next pour. The future at Graham Beck is looking beautifully effervescent.
