As 2021 comes to a close, it’s time to not only look back at the year that was but also enjoy the Christmas break with the ones we love. With the kids out of school and work winding down for many, it’s important to take advantage of the opportunity to relax and have some fun.
There are many family-oriented things to do across South Africa and activities to enjoy at home, allowing you to create lifelong memories with your loved ones. Whether it be in your backyard or out and about, now’s the time to enjoy a well-deserved break.
We’re here to help you with some ideas. Here’s a list of fun activities for you and the family to enjoy this festive season.
Watch a show at the theatre
South Africa is home to many theatre venues that play host to plays, musicals, and pantomimes every December. Each one has the power to transport you into other worlds. Productions such as Janice Honeyman’s Pantomime Cinderella at the Joburg Theatre and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Playhouse Company each retell classic stories of beautiful princesses that are guaranteed to entertain you and the kids.
Visit your local Christmas market
No matter where you are in Mzansi, there’s always a market nearby for you to go shopping for that last-minute holiday gift or the snacks and drinks you’ll get to enjoy at the next family gathering. Markets such as the Edgemead Christmas Craft & Gift Market in Cape Town and the Christmas Field Market in Johannesburg are the places to go to get in some holiday cheer.
Enjoy a braai day with the family
No one ever said you need to leave the house for great food and a fun time – the ingredients are all there. Load the braai up with charcoal and cook delicious boerewors and garlic bread. Put on your swimming costumes and break out the pool floats. South Africa’s favourite pastime is an opportunity for the family to come together and celebrate.
A braai day wouldn’t be complete without music, and that’s where the LG XBOOMGo PL7 comes in handy. Using Meridian technology, this Bluetooth speaker delivers premium-quality sound, complete with deep bass and clear vocals. It has an IPX5 water resistance rating, so don’t worry if some pool water splashes on it, and no need to worry about recharging it halfway through lunch, thanks to its 24-hour battery life.
Share a picnic in the park
With summer in full swing, it’s the perfect chance to get in some fresh air and appreciate Mother Nature. Spend the day out at one of South Africa’s picturesque parks, such as Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The gardens offer you the chance to enjoy a picnic among beautiful flowers and active wildlife. The lush scenery makes for a gorgeous backdrop in family photos too.
Get active and take a hike
After all those festive-season indulgences and treats, it’s a good idea to burn some calories with a view. Get out of the house and enjoy the many hiking trails spread out across Mzansi. Each hike offers its own unique experience. For example, the Hennops Hiking Trail offers thrilling suspension bridge river crossings and a cable car. And the Cape of Good Hope Trail takes you over the gorgeous Diaz Beach and Western shoreline to bring you to the most southern point of the Cape Peninsula – the views are well worth the walk.
Whether you’re sitting back and watching a Panto or getting that blood pumping while taking in a spectacular sight, remember to keep safe and continue to practice social distancing and mask-wearing during the festivities.
