Enter the world of ‘Gran Turismo’ with this TAG Heuer Monaco.
The TAG Heuer Monaco’s origins are deeply rooted in the world of motorsport, with the Swiss luxury firm’s iconic square-shaped timepiece seen not only on the wrists of several racing drivers, such as the skeletonised Monaco Chronograph Original Blue on Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen’s wrist, but also in motion pictures about motor racing. Remember Le Mans (1971), the legendary film starring Steve McQueen? Now, the Monaco has returned to the silver screen, starring in Gran Turismo.
A movie based on the unbelievable true story of a team of unlikely underdogs — a struggling working-class gamer, a failed former racecar driver and an idealistic motorsport executive — risking it all to take on the most elite sport in the world. There’s no doubt that South African-born director Niell Blomkamp’s latest, action-packed film tells an inspiring tale, proving that nothing is impossible when you’re fuelled from within. (If you haven’t seen it, watch the trailer below.)
For Gran Turismo, TAG Heuer has embraced the shared passion for motor racing and the unique universe it creates. As the story unfolds, the La Chaux-de-Fonds-based brand’s presence becomes evident, reinforcing the connection of the Monaco with motor racing.
The Monaco featured in the action-packed film was inspired by its 1970s forebears. The 39 mm, fine-brushed and polished steel case features a fixed bezel fashioned from the same material, as is the bracelet it’s coupled with. The sapphire case back displays TAG Heuer’s renowned Heuer 02 calibre, a self-winding movement offering a generous power reserve of 80 hours. The water resistance is rated at 100 metres. The sunray brushed dial is finished in blue, beautifully contrasted by white sub-dials, sited at 3 and 9 o’clock, and subtle red accents, applied to the seconds and sub-dial hands. This Monaco is priced at R159 000.
