From Western Cape to Global Recognition: Spier’s Johan Jordaan Named Master Winemaker 100’s Chenin Blanc Champion.
Raised on a grape farm near Rawsonville, Spier’s Cellar Master Johan Jordaan briefly considered pursuing chemical engineering. However, the irresistible scent of fermenting grapes ultimately guided his path. This month, his journey from Western Cape farm boy to globally recognized winemaker reached a new pinnacle as he was crowned Chenin Blanc Master Winemaker at the prestigious Master Winemaker 100 awards in Paris.
Mastering Chenin
Johan’s new title comes as no surprise to those familiar with his skill in working with Chenin Blanc, South Africa’s flagship white grape. His expertise was recently showcased when Spier’s Good Natured Chenin Blanc 2023 and 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2022 each won gold medals at The Global Wine Masters, while Seaward Chenin Blanc 2023 earned a silver.
Now in its 12th year, the Master Winemaker 100 is one of the wine industry’s highest honours. Unlike traditional wine competitions, it involves blind judging by Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, and senior buyers, ensuring that only the wines’ quality and style are considered. To even be nominated, a winemaker must first secure Master medals in highly competitive events. Winning the coveted title of Chenin Blanc Master Winemaker places Johan among the world’s top wine producers.
A Heritage Grape
“Chenin Blanc is a wine built in layers,” Johan humbly reflects. “While it’s a winemaker’s dream to work with, it also requires a hands-on approach and a deep understanding of the vineyards. This recognition reflects our whole team—everyone, from those tending our soils to those crafting the wine in the cellar, plays a part.”
This achievement feels especially meaningful given the long history of Chenin Blanc in South Africa. First planted in the 17th century, it has become the country’s most widely cultivated grape, now comprising 18.4% of the national vineyard.
The True Reward
Judges were particularly impressed by the diversity of Spier’s Chenin Blancs, which showcase both complexity and approachability across various styles and price points. However, for Johan, who joined Spier in 2007 as a senior red winemaker and became Cellar Master in 2021, the true reward goes beyond recognition. “While awards like this are greatly appreciated, my real reward comes from knowing that people are enjoying these wines at their tables, creating memories and sharing stories.”
