School’s Out – And the Big Screen Is Filled with Fabulous Things

It’s ‘me time’ for kids as schools close for the third term holidays – and that means movie time! Ster-Kinekor’s cinema screens will be home to robots, transformers and animals of all shapes and sizes including a panda bear, who promise non-stop, big screen entertainment to keep the holiday boredom far away.

With films showing in Ster-Kinekor’s colourful, fun-filled Kids’ Cinemas, the immersive IMAX experience, Cine Prestige and D-Box at select sites, which movie to watch when, and in which cinema format, are the only choices you’ll need to make for the best movie experiences on the big screen.

Kicking off the holiday fun is The Wild Robot, which releases in IMAX in addition to on break-up day, Friday 20 September. This delightful, animated movie follows the story of an intelligent robot called Roz who is stranded on an uninhabited island following a shipwreck. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island’s animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose. A lesson from the film is that “…sometimes to survive, we must become more than we were programmed to be…”. Directed by Chris Sanders, the film features the voices of award-winning actors including Lupita Nyong’o as Roz, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu and Mark Hamill.

Animated robots of an altogether different kind transform the IMAX screen from Friday 27 September, when Transformers One releases in Ster-Kinekor cinemas. The film tells the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, now better known as sworn enemies. But, they were once friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever. With the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson, among others, the film is directed by Josh Cooley.

Another animation film releasing on 27 September brings the action a little closer to home, but who knew there would be a Panda Bear in Africa? A young adventurous Panda travels from China to Africa to rescue his best friend, Jielong the Dragon who has been kidnapped. Along is adventurous journey, he discovers all sorts of strange new animals, and an amazing new world of mountains, deserts and jungles.

And, if you still haven’t had the chance to watch some of the other great kids’ films still on circuit, the holidays present the perfect time to catch up on these too. Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 have both enjoyed a wonderful run at the box office, so book your tickets for these two titles before it’s too late. Ozi: Voice of the Forest about an inquisitive orangutan is another film to add to the holiday viewing list.

While all the kids’ movies will be playing in select cinemas across the country, the younger kids will love the fun-filled, playground-like look of the Kids Cinema featuring its own foyer area with activity tables and catering counter, brightly coloured beanbag seats (with bigger seats for the ‘big’ children at the back of the cinema!), and a slide and ball pool. The Kids Cinemas are located at the following cinema sites: Sandton City, Fourways Mall, East Rand Mall, Carnival City and Centurion in Gauteng, and at V&A Waterfront and the recently opened Kids Cinema at Capegate in Cape Town.

Young cinemagoers can also make the most of the loyalty programmes on offer for great savings, with free movies until 19:00 for kids who are Discovery Vitality members, and The Epic Deal for SK Club members (free sign-up) that get you a movie ticket, drink and popcorn for just R149,90 between Mondays and Thursdays.
