Nature, Refined: The Mother of Pearl Collection by Mervyn Gers Ceramics

Mervyn Gers Ceramics does it again. The Cape Town studio, known for its quietly confident design language and meticulous craftsmanship, unveils its latest obsession: the Mother of Pearl glaze, debuting on a series of sculptural, shell-inspired forms.

Inspired by the ocean’s most delicate details, the collection captures the soft shimmer, layered tones and fluid beauty of natural shells, reimagined in ceramic. The result is a study in restraint – pieces that don’t shout for attention, but draw you in with their luminous depth and tactile calm.

Founder and creative director Mervyn Gers describes it as a glow that reveals itself slowly. “It’s about subtlety – a refined, pearlescent finish that sits just beneath the surface. Something you notice more the longer you live with it.”

For now, the glaze is exclusively paired with the new shell silhouettes, creating a seamless dialogue between form and finish. It’s considered, cohesive, and intentionally restrained.

Sales Director Shireen Ridgway notes that Mother of Pearl introduces a softer counterpoint to the brand’s more expressive glazes. Its mineral-like tones move effortlessly between warm and cool palettes, complementing bold interiors while holding their own in quieter spaces. The mood is unmistakably current – organic, tactile, and grounded in nature, yet elevated through a contemporary lens.

Each piece is handmade in Cape Town, where subtle variations in tone and texture are celebrated, not corrected. No two are the same – a signature of the brand’s commitment to individuality and craft.

Since 2011, Mervyn Gers Ceramics has built a reputation for pieces that feel both intentional and lived-in. Every creation passes through 22 pairs of hands before completion, while eco-conscious practices and recyclable materials remain central to the process.

More than a finish, Mother of Pearl is a feeling — soft light, natural texture, and quiet luxury distilled into objects designed for everyday living.
