From the minute I stepped into the Jaecoo J7 SHS—it fit like a glove, immediately familiar and surprisingly comforting. Even though I only had it for a week, it felt like I’d been driving it for much longer. By the time I had to hand it back, I wasn’t ready to let it go. There’s a warmth and confidence to the cabin that makes it easy to settle into, and the elevated seating position gives me a sense of command on the road—it feels bigger and higher off the ground than it actually is, which is a big plus for me.
Driving around Cape Town in the J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System) was an absolute joy. The turbocharged 1.5-litre engine and electric motor combine for 255 kW and 525 Nm of torque, delivered smoothly through the DHT transmission. It’s punchy when you want it to be but never feels harsh, and the hybrid system offers a remarkable balance between performance and efficiency. With an all-electric range of 90 km and a total combined range of 1,200 km, I didn’t have to worry about finding a charging point, and the DC fast-charge capability means that even a short stop is enough to top up quickly.
Inside, the cabin is modern and intuitive. The 14.8-inch touchscreen handles everything seamlessly, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto keep me connected. The eight-speaker Sony sound system, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and panoramic sunroof all make the interior feel luxurious without being over the top. Storage is thoughtful too: the boot holds 500 litres, expanding to 1,265 litres with the rear seats folded flat, and there’s a cooled compartment in the armrest that’s perfect for snacks or drinks.
I loved the retractable door handles—such a clever feature, especially for the South African market. Not only do they add to the sleek, futuristic look, but they also make the vehicle harder to hijack, which gives extra peace of mind. Combined with the bold styling—the imposing grille and sleek profile—the J7 SHS is a true head-turner wherever you go. Safety and driver-assistance features are plentiful too, from Adaptive Cruise Control and Automatic Emergency Braking to Blind Spot Detection, Lane-Keep Assist, and a 540-degree panoramic camera, making every drive reassuring and stress-free.
After a week with the J7 SHS, I felt like it had become a familiar companion. It’s rare to find an SUV that combines confidence, comfort, and a little thrill all at once. The Jaecoo J7 SHS is powerful, efficient, and packed with luxury, and it makes driving around Cape Town—or anywhere—feel like a genuine pleasure. I wasn’t ready to give it back, and I can’t help but hope for the next time I get behind the wheel.
