From Pasture to Plate: The L.A. Farms Experience in Green Point, Cape Town

Stepping into L.A. Farms in Green Point, you’re immediately struck by the sense of care and intention that permeates the space. I was warmly greeted by the owner, Harun Moreira, and given the freedom to wander and explore—an approach that felt both welcoming and effortlessly engaging. True to my style, my first stop was the homemade biltong, where I sampled everything on offer, from the Angus droëwors to the thick-cut Wagyu biltong. Each bite was a celebration of South Africa’s most beloved snack: rich in flavour, perfectly seasoned, and impressively tender. Even more remarkable was knowing that, because everything is made in-house, any dietary restrictions or special requests can be accommodated without compromise, using their outstanding meat and custom spice blends.

Adjacent to the biltong, the deli display beckoned with fresh sandwiches and pies—house-made pastrami, chicken mayo, and Angus in blankets—all arranged to perfection. Every component had clearly been considered, and nothing in the store felt out of place. Every product is either homegrown, organic, pasture-raised, or ethically sourced. Sampling the in-house deli selections was a revelation: the salami rivalled anything I’ve tasted, while the Wagyu macon was otherworldly, its fat-to-meat ratio elevating it to a level few products can compete with.

The in-store kitchen operates like a well-oiled machine, consistently producing some of the best meat I’ve had all year, with each dish packed with flavour. Yet it’s not just for carnivores—the vegetarian options were equally impressive, thoughtfully composed so that every element shone. L.A. Farms clearly demonstrates that whether you’re meat- or plant-focused, there’s a wealth of expertly prepared choices to explore, cementing its place as a standout destination for a truly satisfying meal.

A recent addition to the store, traditional sourdough bread, completes the farm-to-table experience. Made simply with flour, water, and salt, it’s a nod to thousands of years of baking tradition and adds an authentic, human touch to the visit.

One of the most exciting aspects of L.A. Farms is its team of expert butchers, always ready to guide customers in selecting the perfect cut, arranging custom preparations, or fulfilling special orders. The team’s mastery and dedication are palpable, and everything is certified halal—further extending the store’s commitment to accessibility and care.

What truly elevates the experience, however, is the passion and pride of the staff. Conversations with team members revealed not just professionalism, but a deep connection to their craft. Harun captured this perfectly when I asked what he wished more people understood about food: knowing where your food comes from matters immensely. In a world driven by convenience and increasingly detached from production, L.A. Farms bridges that gap, making ethical, high-quality ingredients accessible without sacrificing ease. The staff remember regulars, greet newcomers warmly, and create an atmosphere where respect for food, animals, and the land feels tangible.

Farms isn’t just about eating well—it’s about understanding, participating in, and appreciating where our food comes from. It’s a fantastic spot in a fantastic area, and anyone who visits will quickly understand why it has become one of Cape Town’s most cherished destinations for thoughtful, exceptional, and ethical food.
