Cape Town After Dark: A Luminous New Playground

This April, Cape Town shows a side you’ve never seen before – glowing, playful, and utterly magical.

From 9–12 April 2026, the historic Company’s Garden transforms into the dreamlike world of LUMENOCITY – The Art of Light, Africa’s first large-scale festival dedicated entirely to light-based art, immersive storytelling, and cutting-edge creative tech.

Imagine wandering beneath ancient trees as glowing pathways lead you past illuminated gardens, projection-mapped façades, and interactive artworks that respond to your movement. Every corner bursts with creativity, all crafted by South African artists, turning the city’s oldest park into an evening playground for the senses.

Festival highlights promise wow moments at every turn: projection artworks on the South African Museum and National Gallery, a towering 10-metre LED “chamber” you can step inside, and the Beam of Hope, a vertical column of light visible across Cape Town’s skyline for the entire festival.

Timed alongside the Two Oceans Marathon, LUMENOCITY offers visitors a cultural twist to an already iconic weekend, making it the perfect excuse to stay a little longer, explore a little deeper, and experience Cape Town after dark.

Family-friendly and endlessly Instagrammable, the festival blends art, technology, and play, complete with food trucks, ambient performances, and interactive installations that invite movement and curiosity. This is creativity rooted in Africa—storytelling, local talent, and Cape Town’s unique magic with light.
