From expressive brushstrokes to lush botanical forms, Anthesis – The Unfolding celebrates the beauty, colour and movement of florals in a new dual exhibition.
Flowers have a way of stealing the show, whether growing wild in a garden or taking centre stage on a canvas. This November, Cape Town’s 33BREE gallery invites art lovers to see botanical beauty through a fresh lens with ANTHESIS – The Unfolding, a dual exhibition by artists Isabel Crause and Mické Buitendag.
Opening on 5 November 2026, the exhibition takes its name from the moment a flower opens, setting the tone for a collection that explores the expressive possibilities of floral forms, colour and paint.
Think soft pinks, creamy whites, deep greens and rich burgundy hues, with petals and foliage emerging through layers of colour and expressive mark-making. Loose brushstrokes meet more delicate details, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity, as though each composition is still finding its shape.
Rather than simply capturing flowers as we see them, the works play with the space between recognisable botanical forms and abstraction. The result is an exploration of nature that feels both familiar and wonderfully open to interpretation.
Bringing Crause and Buitendag together, the exhibition offers an opportunity to experience two artistic perspectives side by side, with colour, texture and the natural world providing a common thread.
The opening evening takes place on Thursday, 5 November, from 18:00 to 20:00, with Jaret Loggenberg and Barbara Lenhard welcoming guests to the gallery. The exhibition will then run from 6 to 28 November at 33BREE on Bree Street, with entrance via Waterkant Street.
A sister gallery to The Artists Gallery at 34 Bree Street, 33BREE continues its programme following SHE – Returns to Cape Town, a group exhibition featuring nine female artists, which runs until 31 October.
