In South Africa, a bakkie isn’t just transport. It’s a personality trait. It tows your boat, hauls braai wood, conquers a gravel road like it owes you money, and still cleans up nicely for dinner in Sandton.
For decades, the segment has been dominated by a few familiar heavyweights. You know the ones. They’re brilliant machines, but they’ve also had the playground mostly to themselves.
I remember when our favourite German marque, Mercedes-Benz, joined the party with the X-Class. On paper, it sounded like the perfect recipe: a luxury badge, a premium finish, and proper bakkie credentials. But the internet, being the internet, quickly dubbed it “the Navara in mascara.” Needless to say, this particular unusual suspect didn’t quite make the dent in the market it expected.
“The ‘Navara in mascara’ saga proved one thing: in South Africa, you can’t fake a bakkie.”
Fast forward to 2026, and things look very different.
With the arrival of fresh contenders, new designs, clever tech, electrification, and tempting price tags are reshaping the game. Meet the six unusual suspects shaking up South Africa’s favourite vehicle segment.
GWM P-Series – The Value King
Engine: 2.0 ℓ turbodiesel, 120 kW / 400 Nm
Capability: 3,500 kg towing
Price: from R414 950
If value for money is your top priority, the GWM P-Series stands out, selling 559 units in March 2026 and becoming the country’s fifth best-seller.
This Chinese contender arrived quietly in 2020 but quickly proved it meant business. The cabin feels far more premium than the price suggests, with leather trim, a chunky touchscreen and plenty of driver-assist tech.
On tar, it’s refined. On gravel, it feels planted. Add a solid warranty, and it’s easy to see why the P-Series is one of the segment’s fastest-rising players.

Peugeot Landtrek – The French Outsider
Engine: 1.9 ℓ turbodiesel, 110 kW / 350 Nm
Capability: 3,000 kg towing
Price: from R388 900
The Peugeot Landtrek is what happens when the French build a bakkie, and somehow it works. Distinctive styling sets it apart from the usual square-jawed workhorses, while the interior feels more SUV-like than expected.
Comfortable, clever and quietly stylish, the Landtrek leans strongly into the lifestyle side of bakkie ownership.
In a segment full of serious faces, the French outsider brings a bit of flair.

Jeep Gladiator – The Trail Boss
Engine: 3.6 ℓ V6 petrol, 209 kW / 347 Nm
Capability: 2,721 kg towing
Price: from R1 399 900
The Jeep Gladiator’s standout feature is its adventurous spirit, appealing to those who want off-road prowess.
Solid axles, locking differentials and serious off-road credentials mean it thrives where the tar ends and the fun begins.
The cabin is comfortable, the tech is modern, and the unmistakable Jeep styling means you’ll never lose it in a parking lot.
It’s the rebel of the group, and proudly so.

BYD Shark – The Electric Pioneer
Engine: 1.5 ℓ turbo petrol plug-in hybrid, 321 kW / 650 Nm (combined)
Capability: 2,500 kg towing
Price: from R959 900
The BYD Shark might just be the bakkie dragging this segment into the future. Pairing a turbo petrol engine with dual electric motors, it delivers massive torque and serious performance.
Inside, the cabin feels more like a modern EV than a traditional bakkie, with big digital displays, slick tech and loads of connectivity. “Hey BYD” gets the techno party started with voice commands.
If electrification is the next chapter for bakkies, the Shark is already writing the opening pages.

Changan Hunter – The Silent Torque
Engine: 2.0 ℓ range-extender hybrid (turbodiesel + dual electric motors), 200 kW / 470 Nm (combined)
Price: from R449 900
The Changan Hunter brings a clever twist to electrification.
Instead of relying purely on batteries, it uses a petrol engine as a generator to power electric motors. The result is smooth, instant torque without the usual range anxiety.
Bold styling and rugged design cues suggest it’s ready for work.
Think of it as the quiet innovator of the group.

JMC Grand Avenue – The Budget Bruiser With a Luxury Twist
Engine: 2.0 ℓ turbodiesel, 104 kW / 355 Nm
The Grand Avenue has not yet landed on our shores, with its arrival expected later this year, so pricing has not yet been confirmed. JMC’s current Vigus range starts from around R299 900, which gives a sense of the brand’s positioning.
The Grand Avenue aims for a premium experience, promising space, tech, and refined features at the top of JMC’s range.
Visually, it makes quite the entrance. That massive grille wouldn’t look out of place on an American pickup.
If it delivers on its promise of toughness, space and a touch of luxury at a competitive price, it could quietly become one of the most interesting new players in the bakkie game.

A New Era for the Bakkie
For years, the South African bakkie segment has been ruled by a handful of legends. They remain brilliant machines. But these unusual suspects prove the landscape is shifting.
New brands are bringing bold ideas, electrified powertrains, clever tech and competitive pricing to the table.
For South African buyers, that means more choice, more innovation and far more lively debates around the braai about which bakkie deserves a spot in the driveway.
