The GWM P300: The New-Age Bakkie That Gets the Balance Right

There’s a moment, somewhere between your third coffee of the day and that late afternoon “should we just go away this weekend?” WhatsApp, where your car stops being just a car. It becomes part of your life.

And that’s exactly where the GWM P300 fits in.

Not as a workhorse. Not as a weekend toy. But as that rare thing in the South African motoring space, a bakkie that genuinely understands the rhythm of modern life.

Monday to Friday, It Plays the Game

Let’s be honest. Most bakkies spend more time in traffic than they do on gravel.

School runs. Client meetings. Quick Woolies stops that somehow become full trolley situations. The P300 leans into that reality instead of pretending it doesn’t exist.

It’s quiet enough to take calls without shouting. Comfortable enough that you don’t arrive at meetings looking like you’ve wrestled the seat. And refined enough that, parked outside a Sandton office, it doesn’t feel out of place.

There’s a calm confidence to the way it moves. Under the bonnet sits a new 2.4-litre turbodiesel pushing out 135kW and 480Nm, paired to a 9-speed automatic gearbox.

But here’s the thing, those numbers don’t tell the full story.

What matters is how it delivers. The torque comes in smoothly, the gearbox shifts intelligently, and the whole experience feels relaxed rather than rushed. It’s a noticeable step up from the older 2.0-litre motor, both in responsiveness and refinement.

Even the ride has been sorted. Still a proper ladder-frame underneath, still tough, but now far more composed. Less bounce, less noise, more everyday usability.

Then Friday Happens…

And suddenly, everything shifts.

Laptop closes. Group chat lights up. Someone says “let’s go away” and within 10 minutes, you’re mentally packing.

Throw bikes in the back. Cooler box, check. Bag, check. Someone inevitably forgets something, doesn’t matter, you’ll find a garage on the way. The point is, you go.

And that’s where the P300 quietly shines.

With a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, it’s more than capable of hauling boats, trailers, or whatever your version of a weekend looks like.

It doesn’t turn adventure into admin. It just makes it happen.

Inside, It’s Not Trying to Be Tough

Step inside and you realise quickly, this isn’t built for farmers anymore. This is built for people.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen dominates the dash, backed by a digital instrument cluster, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless charging all part of the deal. Then there are the details. Heated leather seats. Ambient lighting. A proper sunroof, still a rare flex in this segment.

It’s the kind of cabin that feels more premium SUV than traditional bakkie.

And practically, it still delivers. Space for five adults, multiple charging points, and one of those clever touches you’ll actually use, a tailgate with a built-in step that makes loading far less of a gym session.

It Still Does Bakkie Things. Properly.

Don’t worry, it hasn’t gone soft. Underneath the lifestyle layer is still a properly capable machine.

The 4×4 system offers torque-on-demand capability, paired with a low-range transfer case when things get technical.

You’ve also got a rear diff lock, multiple off-road modes, and even features like crawl control on higher-spec models, which basically means the car does the tricky stuff while you focus on not picking the wrong line.

Ground clearance sits around the 220mm mark, with solid approach and departure angles, more than enough for most real-world adventures.

Fuel consumption? Claimed at around 8.0–8.2L/100km (I’m a little heavy on the right foot, so didn’t quite get this), but realistically closer to the high 9s depending on how you drive. Which, for something this size and capability, is more than respectable.

Safety & Tech, Properly Loaded

This is where things get quietly impressive.

You’re getting the full modern safety suite:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • 360-degree camera

It’s the kind of tech that takes the edge off long drives and makes everyday driving feel that much easier.

The Subtle Flex

There’s something else happening here, something a bit more understated.

The P300 doesn’t scream status. It doesn’t need to. It’s for the kind of person who knows what they’re doing, where they’re going, and doesn’t feel the need to explain it.

It’s a quiet flex.

Pull up at a restaurant, it looks right. Park it at a trailhead, it looks right. Load it up for a road trip, it feels right.

That’s a difficult balance to get right. And somehow, GWM has managed it.

The Vann Take

This isn’t a bakkie for the guy trying to prove something.

It’s for the guy who’s already figured a few things out.

The one who wants:
a bit of comfort without losing capability
a bit of style without trying too hard
a vehicle that fits into life, not one that dictates it

The P300 isn’t about extremes. It’s about balance.

And in 2026, that might just be the most premium thing of all. Balance.
