After its smashing success in Sandton, Johannesburg, the glamorous, Asian-inspired Tang restaurant and bar made its way to Cape Town’s iconic V&A Waterfront. The name was inspired by the explosive taste sensation that is “tanginess” and the ancient Chinese Tang dynasty that revered creativity and expression. And so, diners can expect that very philosophy to percolate into all aspects of the dining experience, from the blockbuster cocktail and wine menus to the sophisticated and sensual interior design.
The food is an ode to the contemporary Japanese izakaya (tapas bar) and Hong Kong’s classic Cantonese eateries. Think small plates of crispy calamari, tempura vegetables and tuna tataki. Dim sum and tacos make an appearance, too, with delish chicken, meat, seafood and vegetarian options. Salads are a highlight (try the lobster salad with a spicy lemon yuzu dressing), and so are the wok dishes. Expect Peking duck, KFC Korean fried chicken, black cod miso and a wagyu cheese burger. Oh, and a full sushi menu to choose from, too. The options really are limitless, with dishes to suit every palate.
The drinks menu is just as satisfying with the regular favourites on offer as well as some Japanese-inspired cocktails, non-alc included. A full wine list of great local and international wines is also available.
Restaurant owner Nicky van der Walt, over the last couple of years, released his own wine label, Mirabelle. Try the Rosé, a Provençal-style rosé with notes of cherry, strawberry, and candyfloss, subtle rose petal perfume, and a lemon twist finish.
A sophisticated business lunch, a romantic dinner for 2, or a stretched-out table for family and friends gatherings… TANG at the V&A Waterfront is a must-visit.
