Set within the cool, maritime landscape of Constantia, Steenberg Estate introduces the Canvas Collection, a small and considered release that brings a more expressive dimension to its precisely curated portfolio. It is a collection grounded in place, yet guided by a quieter, more instinctive approach to winemaking.
Developed through the close collaboration of Cellarmaster Elunda Basson and Viticulturist Vlok Hanekom, the collection reflects a shared belief that the most compelling wines emerge when detailed vineyard work is allowed to speak with clarity in the cellar. Years of block by block viticulture across varied soils, aspects and microclimates have laid the foundation for this more interpretive approach.
Comprising Semillon, Nebbiolo and Blanc, the collection moves beyond the parameters of Steenberg’s core range, where structure and stylistic precision define each wine. Canvas instead creates space for a more fluid expression. Blending becomes intuitive, oak is used with restraint and vineyard diversity is embraced as a creative advantage rather than a constraint.

This philosophy extends into the visual identity. In collaboration with South African conceptual artist Athol Moult, the labels take on a distinctly contemporary form. Minimalist and tactile, each bottle is treated as a canvas, marked by deliberate gesture. A carved swan feather references Swaaneweide, the historic feeding place of the swans, while two restrained brushstrokes capture a moment of creative decision. The result is quietly striking, balancing heritage with modernity.
At the centre of the collection is Blanc, Steenberg’s reimagined wooded Sauvignon Blanc. Matured in French oak and bottled under cork, it offers a layered and textured expression that moves beyond varietal convention. Sourced from multiple vineyard parcels and blended with a light Semillon influence, Blanc balances freshness with depth, delivering a wine shaped as much by instinct as by terroir.
The Semillon presents a confident standalone expression of a varietal often reserved for blending. Textural and poised, it reveals layered aromatics and a natural affinity for food, with the structure to evolve gracefully over time. Its recognition as Best in Category at the Platter’s Wine Guide 2023 affirms Steenberg’s authority in this space.

Nebbiolo completes the trio as one of the estate’s most distinctive offerings. As the first to plant the varietal locally, Steenberg continues to explore its potential within Constantia’s cool climate. The result is a wine that balances structure and elegance, with a purity that reflects both site and careful handling in the cellar.
The Canvas Collection ultimately reflects a dialogue between vineyard and winemaker. It is a measured shift rather than a departure, where precision remains intact but is softened by creative freedom. Within this space, Steenberg allows its wines to unfold with greater nuance, guided by the vineyard and shaped with a lighter hand.
