Spotlight: new Swatch art watches

This duo of vibrant watches was created in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Roy Lichtenstein and his bright pop art style. The first piece takes inspiration from the American pop artist’s Girl from 1963, reproduced on the watch’s face. The reverse side of the strap features another detail from this artwork — an aerosol spray can.

The second Roy Lichtenstein artwork-inspired piece pays homage to the Manhatten-born artist’s Reverie artwork from 1965. Like Lichtenstein’s Girl-inspired Swatch, this timepiece depicts the artwork on the watch face. The text  “The melody haunts my reverie” present on the original artwork can be found on the canary yellow (to echo the woman’s hair) strap.

Inspired by two of René Magritte’s artworks, these Swatches mark the 125th anniversary of the surrealist painter’s birth. Translating the Belgian artist’s most famous paintings into wearable art, the first watch pays homage to Magritte’s La Trahison Des Images painting and features his iconic puns on the strap: “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”), with the watchmaker adding “Ceci est une Swatch” (“This is a Swatch”) to the wording. The dial adds further humorous irony with silver-coloured hands.

The second Magritte-inspired piece takes inspiration from his Le Fils De L’Homme artwork, which depicts the artist’s The Son of Man printed across the front of the multi-coloured dial, case and strap. The back of the strap plays with the surrealist nature of Magritte’s work with the phrase “Ceci est une Swatch avec une pomme” (“This is a Swatch with an apple”).

A watch inspired by the Japanese artwork by Katsushika Hokusai and the astrolabe artefact by Muhammad ibn Ahmad Al-Battûtî, this Swatch depicts two masterpieces on one piece. The front of the timepiece depicts Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, while the back shows the astrolabe’s flat projection of a night sky.

Le Gallerie Degli Uffizi

In collaboration with Le Gallerie Degli Uffizi, these two Swatches were inspired by two Sandro Botticelli masterpieces, Nascita Di Venere and Allegoria Della Primavera. The former features a striking mythological scene in pastel hues with gold-coloured accents. Like Botticelli’s masterpiece, the latter is an ode to beauty and nature, making it a wearable celebration of spring, love and prosperity.
