JP Meyer, born in 1960 in South Africa’s Free State, is a contemporary artist known for his vibrant colours, playful imagery, and storytelling that sparks the imagination. His path to art was far from ordinary. After finishing school, he spent years travelling the world as a flight attendant with South African Airways, experiences that shaped his perspective and left a lasting mark on his visual language.
In 1996, JP decided to devote himself fully to art. He enrolled at the Foundation School of Art in Cape Town and immersed himself in painting, graduating in 2000 with distinction. Soon after, he began exhibiting his work, quickly gaining recognition as a fresh and original voice in South Africa’s art scene.
JP’s paintings are instantly recognisable. Bright colours, bold shapes, and a playful sense of humour draw the eye, while layers of meaning invite closer inspection. He finds inspiration in mythology, pop culture and memories both personal and collective. Every canvas feels alive, a dialogue between technique and imagination where symbols and figures appear spontaneously. His mastery of acrylics brings energy and unpredictability, making each piece feel immediate yet timeless.
Over the years, JP has held numerous solo exhibitions and joined group shows, earning acclaim for work that balances whimsy with thoughtfulness. His paintings are sought after by collectors, institutions and corporations, and can be viewed today at the WORDART Gallery in Cape Town, where they continue to captivate audiences with their originality and spirit.
Now based in Porterville, JP Meyer continues to experiment and push the boundaries of narrative and abstraction.
