Casbeth draws on the rich language of communal garment exchange and traditional adornments, cowry shells, beadwork, red ochre, and brass rings, to articulate a vision of sustainability that transcends materials, embracing continuity of culture itself.
Discarded and donated fabrics, from curtains and second-hand clothing to aluminum blinds and mosaic glass offcuts, are transformed into wearable art. “Siren” celebrates the mystical energy of the ocean, a symbol of healing, transformation, and spiritual flow. Drawing inspiration from ancestral bathing rituals—where sea water is collected to cleanse negative energy and invite good fortune—the collection channels the sacred relationship between culture, water, and renewal. Across South African communities, including the Pedi, Nguni, and Khoi-San, the ocean is revered as a space of purification and ancestral connection.
Casbeth translates this spiritual reverence into garments with textured fabrics, swirled pleats, and hand-stitched details that mimic the movement of water.
