One of the Mother City’s most celebrated addresses has stepped confidently into a new era. The newly reopened InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town has officially unveiled its transformation, restoring its status as a landmark of waterfront luxury.
First inaugurated in 1997 by Nelson Mandela, the hotel has long been woven into Cape Town’s story. Now, following a multimillion-rand redevelopment of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, it returns with a renewed aesthetic that balances contemporary refinement with deep respect for its heritage.

Set between the Atlantic Ocean and the unmistakable silhouette of Table Mountain, the 306-room property makes full use of its cinematic setting. Interiors by LW Design Group’s Gina Munro introduce soft natural tones, clean lines and generous sightlines that frame the mountain and harbour beyond. Original hardwood floors have been carefully preserved, while even the craftsmen who laid the marble in 1997 returned to reinterpret the foyer – a meaningful nod to continuity.
The hotel’s 40 suites and thoughtfully designed rooms cater to today’s fluid traveller, where business, leisure and cultural discovery often intertwine. Positioned at the heart of the V&A Waterfront, guests are moments from ferries to Robben Island, golden beaches and the creative pulse of the city. A knowledgeable concierge team acts as cultural connector, unlocking private winelands tastings, ocean adventures and insider neighbourhood experiences.

Culinary credentials are equally compelling. Le Bistrot de JAN, under the direction of Michelin-starred South African chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, delivers French bistro classics reimagined with Cape influence. Additional venues range from elevated all-day dining and afternoon tea to a vibrant pool deck where craft cocktails and wood-fired pizzas are served against a sunset-lit horizon.
Wellness finds its expression at Spa InterContinental Cape Town, where indigenous botanicals, personalised treatments and a traditional Turkish Hammam create a serene counterpoint to the city’s energy.
As part of InterContinental’s global portfolio spanning more than 70 countries, this reopening signals more than a refurbishment. It marks the return of a Cape Town icon – polished, purposeful and perfectly placed for a new generation of global travellers.
